Description: Beautifully aged plantation desk, from the early to mid-1800s. I believe it is made from solid cherry, although the drop door may be mahogany or another wood. It is a veneer over a thick 1-inch thick board. The top, sides and bottom are solid. The drop-front door features a lock with two small deadbolts, It includes the key and the lock works great, keeping the door shut and the contents safe. Inside, the drop door features a writing surface, which I think is felt or a similar material. It's inlaid into the inside of the door and is 21" x 11". One tear, which is 5" long and may have been repaired. I can't tell - it is flat and completely intact. The main storage features two shelves divided into 6 compartments each and separated by thin wood dividers. The dividers are removable. The bottom area has a large compartment fronted by a further divided area. Two rectangular compartments, one with a removable wood top with a wood knob, plus three square compartments. The hinges and all hardware appears original, are all sound, and in very good condition. The top has a raised border on three sides. This may have been used as a podium, or just to keep documents from falling. I have seen these called Plantation Desks, Civil War Field Desk, Travel Desk, a Postman's Desk and a Secretary Desk. It is circa early to mid-1800s. Sometimes these would sit atop anoth small desk, or have legs. This one does not. It is a tabletop version. It is used, and has a beautiful patina and expected wear from years of use. Lots of scratches, nicks, etc. Two pieces where veneer is missing, and one are of writing surface shows a tear. All make this piece more appealing and none are detracting nor diminish the beauty of this piece. It is 23" wide x 19" tall x 12" deep.It weighs 21 lbs.
