Description: This sale is for a CR-1 CommRadio manufactured from 2013 - 2015 by AeroStream Communications located in Golden, CO. These micro receivers have relatively low production. Between the CR-1 and the CR-1A receiver, we have previously sold about 36 of these units here on Ebay. Serial number of this CR-1 is 0303. The highest serial number to pass through our hands during the past 10 years is #1378 and this leads us to believe that the total manufacturing of the CR-1 and CR-1A was 1500 units (or less). Thus, this is not a high production receiver and it seems to have demand from hobbyists seeking something unusual to enjoy, DXers wanting a receiver that can be easily transported to remote locations, and emergency preppers who appreciate that this receiver covers the AM, FM, VHF, and UHF bands.This receiver is used, but in very nice condition with only minor hints of previous ownership that you'd need to inspect closely to see. We ask that you please view our pictures to understand cosmetics. We placed a deck of playing cards next to the receiver in one of the pictures for size comparison, but please note that the deck of cards is not included in the sale and is a display prop to demonstrate the micro size of this receiver. The CR-1 has been fully tested and operates nicely and as designed by AeroStream Communications. It is a wonderfully sensitive unit in a micro package. The previous owner replaced the internal lithium battery before sending the receiver on to us and so the new owner will get a receiver with a fresh lithium rechargeable battery. The receiver comes with a copy of the user manual, a couple of receiver reviews, a USB charging cable (to connect to your USB charger), and a telescopic antenna featuring a BNC connector to attach to the rear panel of this receiver. The short telescopic antenna will provide reception on strong signals, but is not recommended for use for DXing as it will not provide the number and quality of signals. Finally, we are also supplying a CD which contains the user manual and the aforementioned documents in PDF files. In viewing the pictures, you will see that this receiver with internal rechargeable battery capability, small size, portability, and frequency coverage will appeal to emergency preppers. It is hard to imagine the size of this receiver, but suffice to say that you can pretty much hold it in the palm of your hand which makes it easy to place on a bedside nightstand, take to camp, place in an RV, put on board a boat, or take to the park or mountains for that DXpedition. Of course you will need appropriate antenna(s) depending upon how you plan to utilize or locate this receiver. The included will antenna work and will provide some reception, but best results are found when using a proper antenna such as a dipole or similar for MW and HF and a discone for FM, VHF, and UHF reception.These CR-1 receivers were manufactured in relatively small quantities and are in demand. The manufacturer discontinued the unit and so it is unfortunate that they are no longer available for sale as new. The only method of obtaining one is to find the CR-1 when someone desires to let one go from their hands....which is not as common as many other communications receivers. Radio receiver design has progressed during the past century in steady fashion with certain developments giving a significant boost during the lifespan of this invention. Noteworthy developments include the introduction of such things as the tube amplification of signals, the superhet design, application of semi-conductors in circuits, miniaturization of circuits and surface mount components, and SDR technology. Many incremental improvements were punctuated by steep gains during the past century. The last of these, SDR (software defined radio), marries the receiver with computer power and merges the two into one package. Originally receivers offered some introductory SDR features, but were still radios with front panel controls. Eventually, SDR units became nothing more than black boxes plugging into a computer and utilizing both the computer's computational power for operation and then the keyboard / mouse for controls. Later SDR units actually have divested from the computer and now are themselves a computer with front panel radio controls. This CR-1 is basically an advanced embedded SDR unit that provides a level of performance previously unavailable in a receiver of this size and price class. It is a self-contained SDR that offers unbelievable performance that can match and exceed many desktop receivers that are several times larger and the menus and functions are accessed by the minimal front panel controls. In addition, the CR-1 can be held in the palm of your hand and operates off of a rechargeable lithium battery which enables it to be used for such things as remote DXing, camping, or even emergency amateur and shortwave monitoring. Today's "smart" phones are really portable computers that perform dozens of tasks in addition to placing phone calls and this miniature cell phone computer is amazing by standards set even 10 years ago. The CR-1 is akin to the smart phone in miniaturization as it affords wonderful mediumwave, short wave, amateur radio, FM, VHF, and UHF reception and can be packed in a tiny travel bag for transport.As previously mentioned, this receiver has a built-in lithium battery which allows the receiver to operate for about 8-10 hours when AC is unavailable. The manufacturer claims a power consumption of about 1 watt which is extraordinary low making this receiver ideal for emergency use when power is in short supply or unavailable and when minimal current drain is paramount.To recharge the receiver, you merely plug the USB into your auto cigarette lighter input (with USB adapter), your laptop, or even a handheld cell phone battery charger. Since this is a self contained receiver, there are no expensive batteries to purchase and no hassle with removing and replacing batteries during the charging process. And if for some reason your lithium battery depletes, you can operate the receiver by connecting the USB cord to a power source. This translates into a tuning mode selection whereby the user can select either Amateur or Shortwave band tuning modes. Since this receiver does not have a front panel for direct entry, this tuning band selection enables rapid movement up and down either the amateur radio or shortwave band selection. Once you select the band, you can use the tuning knob to move within the chosen band. This is a novel method that enables the CR-1 to be miniature enough since the size of the front panel would require a much larger receiver to house the keypad.Another surprising feature of the CR-1 is that it offers a nice spectrum of tuning options. Thus, you have tuning from 150 - 500 KHz in the longwave band, 500 - 1700 KHz in the mediumwave band, and 1700 KHz - 30 MHz in the HF spectrum. The HF spectrum includes such listening options as amateur radio, shortwave broadcast stations, aeronautical and marine weather, military communications, and CB radio. In addition to the standard LW, MW, HF bands, this receiver also includes coverage in the commercial FM band from 87.7 - 107.9 MHz, VHF coverage from 64 - 260 MHz, and UHF coverage from 437 - 512 MHz. The addition of the analog VHF and UHF bands enable reception of the higher frequency amateur 2 meter and 70 cm bands plus aircraft bands, public service (police, fire, and other emergency transmissions), NOAA weather, marine weather, and a variety of other transmissions such as road crews, bus and rail communications, stadium or prison security, etc. Keep in mind that to receive these transmissions requires that you be within the vicinity of the signals and have an appropriate receiving antenna such as a discone which offers reception of a wide array of frequencies (FM, VHF, and UHF). Other great features of this receiver include well-chosen DSP filter bandwidths, separate headphone and speaker outputs, and all of these things in a tough durable chassis that utilizes gold plated circuit board pads.
