F-4E 68-506 was given a special paint scheme to mark the retirement of the F-4E from the Hellenic Air Force. F-4E 68-506 MSN 3693 was delivered to the USAF 496th TFS in 1971 and after many transfers ended its time in the USA with the Indiana ANG 163rd TFS. In 1991 the aircraft was sold to the Hellenic AF and assigned to the 338 Mira and in 2005 it went to the 337 Mira and now serves as gate guard at Larissa AB. McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War. Finally phased out by the F-14, F-16 and F/A-18, the Phantom was retired in 1996. Variants in this series have notable differences in the nose and/or tail fin and slight variations in the engines' exhaust.
