Description: Offered for your consideration is this original work by James Montgomery Flagg. This piece is done in 1889 is an Original Pen & Ink "I Feel Rather Specious Bout Dat Cluff Scott". The overall size of the piece is 8.5"by 10.5" on yellowed white paper. Flagg painted or drew on what ever was handy. James Montgomery Flagg was an American illustrator best known for his creation and of the World War 1 poster of Uncle Sam “I Want You”. He was born in 1877 so this piece would have been done at 12 years of age. What is interesting about Flagg is that his career started at the age of 12 selling his illustrations to many New York magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post. He studied art in both New York and London. This particular piece is from my father collection which is now in my hands is extensive (over 300 items) of Flagg’s early years, with many of the drawings quite what you would expect of a young child. Flagg for some reason must of sense he was going to be famous because many items of the collection are both signed and dated by Flagg. This makes it easy to see his development as an artist/illustrator. The collection can be divided into several mediums used by Flagg from crayon, pencil to ink to water color to those that use multiple mediums. Included with the collection are several correspondences from throughout Flagg’s life as well as a personnel letter to his future wife written while he was studying art in London. Some of Flagg’s drawing would be considered in poor taste today and they reflect minorities, specifically blacks in stereotypical roles including captions which are not acceptable in today’s world. Flagg took to drawing New York’s society and political figures in the news. The above item is signed(initialed) JMF and dated 1889. I Googled the name Cluff Scott hoping it may have been an actual name or person with a variation on the spelling but it is more likely it was Flagg using colloquialism on the southern black depicted.
