Description: The Pattern 1907 bayonet, officially called the sword bayonet was a British bayonet designed to be used with the Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) rifle. The Pattern 1907 bayonet was used by both British and Australian forces throughout both WW1 and WW2. It consists of a 17 inch one piece still blade and tang, with a cross guard and pommel made from wrought iron or mild steel, and a wooden grip usually made of walnut secured to the tang by two screws. The entire bayonet was 21.75 inches long. The pattern 1907 bayonet was supplied with a leather scabbard fitted with a steel top-mount and chape. The hilt is in very good condition. The wooden handles are nice with a pleasing dark mahogany color. There are some small nicks, scratches and dents on the wooden grips. One grip has 5/8 inch long gouge. The pommel and cross guard retain nearly all of their original blue that has now turned to a plumb patina. There are a few tiny nicks and scratches on the pommel. There are some tiny specks of corrosion on the pommel and cross guard. There is a D with an arrow in it on one side of the pommel. The release button works. The blade is in good condition. It is mostly light grey only retaining about 25% of its original blue. It has some very tiny freckling of cleaned oxidation the entire length of the blade. Near the tip there is some darker spotting. The edge and tip are nice. On the ricasso is a faint crown (King George VI cypher) 190 (7 is missing for 1907 pattern), 9, 17, and Sanderson (which is the maker). This bayonet was issued in September of 1917 (9 17). On the obverse are 3 British inspection marks, the government up arrow inspection mark, and a X (bend test mark). The scabbard is in good condition. The are no markings on the metal pieces. The throat piece is loose which is pretty typical for these scabbards. The metal throat piece is covered by the canvas frog and I didn't take it off. The stitching in the side seam is sound. The leather body is a faded chocolate brown color with numerous minor scuffs, scratches and nicks from use. The throat piece has the tear drop stud rather than the round stud. The metal end piece retains nearly all of its original blue which has now turned to a plumb patina. The frog is in very good condition. It is marked H 100448. Overall, this is a nice example of a British WW1 Pattern 1907 bayonet!! Please look at the pictures. They are part of the description and show condition.
