RARE REGULATION MODIFIED BRITISH 1796 PATTERN INFANTRY OFFICER'S SWORD to SABRE

Scarce British 1796 Pattern Infantry Officer's Sword Regulation Modified with a Curved Sabre Blade Click images to enlarge Description Scarce Original British 1796 Pattern Infantry Officer's Sword Custom Regulation Modified with a Curved Sabre Blade c1790s A rare original early example of a British 1796 Pattern Infantry Officer's Sword which has been period modified with a 29 inch curved Sabre blade. With the lack of markings on the blade it was most likely a private purchase. Perhaps by a Cavalry officer, especially Pre-1803 when officers may have wanted a Sabre blade but to still conform with the hilt regulations. Description: The sword has its regulation gilded brass hilt with the early rigid clam shell guard. Later variants of the 1796 Infantry sword had folding clamshells. It has the correct knuckle bow and urn shaped pommel and a quillon finial on the crossguard. The sword has a unmarked curved single-edged fullered Sabre blade with a false edge starting about 6 inches from the point. There is the owners initials engrave on on side of the clam shell guard (note image). The condition is good with a dark grey patina of age with minor pitting and a couple small rust spots. Very slight movement in the hilt and guard. The wood sword grip has its original tightly wrapped wire surround. Blade Size: 29 inches / Total Size: (36 5/8 inches) The sword does not have a scabbard.
