Description: This sword is an example of a non-regulation Foot Officer's sword imported for use during the civil war. I believe it is made by scarce German maker. I have a list of German civil war sword makers and this maker's mark does not appear on that list. These swords were predominantly made by Clauberg or William Walshield and identified as such. This handsome sword is in overall good condition. The large iron hilt/guard features a semi decorative, two branch iron guard and backstrap that terminates into a robust knucklebow. The hilt is tight and strong. The original velvet washer is present but pretty worn. The original shark skin covered grip is in good minus condition. The shark skin shows wear with a small piece is missing near the pommel. There is a double twist brass wire bound around the handle and each turn flanked by a single strand or wire. There is some wire loss. The 32 inch blade is etched/engraved with a floral design and U.S. and an Eagle w/banner. The etching goes half way up the blade and is faint but still visible/readable. The U.S. is on one side and the Eagle with the E Pluribus Unum banner is on the other side. It retains some of its original blue surface which is now coal gray. Other areas are silver or lighter gray giving the blade a mottled appearance. The edge is nice with no significant nicks. There is some very light pitting on the very tip. The spine is marked "iron proof". The ricasso is marked with a dotted oval with an arrow in it and the word Solingen. This is a maker mark unknown to me. The obverse bears a brass disc stamped "Proved" which commonly seen on British non-regulation swords. Not a bad example of a fairly scarce non-regulation infantry civil war officer's sword for your collection!!!! NO SCABBARD! The pictures are part of the description and show condition.
