Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph SCHOOL OF ATHENS, in the Camera Della Segnatura, Raphael Art History Print A smaller B/W print depicting art objects currently in the museums of the world, published in 1916 Print depicts: The School of Athens is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. The fresco was painted between 1509 and 1511 as a part of Raphael's commission to decorate the rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello, in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The Room of the Segnatura contains Raphael's most famous frescoes. Besides being the first work executed by the great artist in the Vatican they mark the beginning of the high Renaissance. The room takes its name from the highest court of the Holy See, the "Segnatura Gratiae et Iustitiae", which was presided over by the pontiff and used to meet in this room around the middle of the 16th century. Originally the room was used by Julius II (pontiff from 1503 to 1513) as a library and private office. The iconographic programme of the frescoes, which were painted between 1508 and 1511, is related to this function. It was certainly established by a theologian and meant to represent the three greatest categories of the human spirit: Truth, Good and Beauty. ~~~ From a Collection of Prints, Published by The University Prints, Cambridge, Mass, Depicting the Most Famous Art in the Museums of the World Size: Approximately 5.5" X 8" Blank on Reverse Condition: Excellent - Very Good+ - Good - Fair - Poor (but of historical interest) Very light handing wear - This have been well stored (All sharp and clean) << Click Here to See Other Prints >> This is an Original Item - Not a Reproduction Important: P/H is combined on multiple items that can be mailed together. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
