Description: This is an unusual subject, carved and painted by Swiss carver R. Michel. Two other listings were found of carvings by this artist and they say that he was active as a woodcarver in the 1940s. Michel depicted a farmer carrying on his arm a basket of seeds that he's scattering onto his field with his other hand. The carving of the face and the basket is meticulously detailed and the painting is thoughtfully done, showing dark stains on the front of his apron. Even the ground beneath his feet is carved, making this figure a cut above most of this type. Signed "R. Michel, Woodcarving, Haldenstrasse, Lucerne" 7.25" tall, and romantically nostalgic. Perfect condition.
