Description: For sale is a set of two non-dug UK Royal Observer Corps buttons. King George VI awarded the Observer Corps their Royal title in April 1941 to recognize their exemplary service during the Battle of Britain. The Royal Observer Corps Association writes that the "Royal Observer Corps (ROC) being formed in 1925 gained a valuable role in being the “Eyes and Ears” of the Royal Air Force [for aircraft spotting and identification]. Later during the Cold War... the ROC provided key monitoring, recording and appraisal of nuclear fallout if a nuclear attack had occurred in the United Kingdom." The ROC stood down in the mid-1990s but their bunkers remain scattered throughout the British Isles to this day. These coat- (24 mm) and cuff-size (18 mm) gilt-finish buttons would have been worn by ROC officers. The precise dating on the coat button is uncertain as Gaunt manufactured buttons throughout the 20th Century. This pair came together, however, and the accompanying cuff "Stillwell & Son Ltd. London" (weakly-struck) backmark is a bit easier as McGuinn and Bazelon write that the firm only "lasted until 1957." These examples are in excellent condition with straight shanks, some minor evidence of wear or use, and no pushes.
